WGA battle escalates when Patric Verrone calls out John Wells on “really fucking up The West Wing after Sorkin left”

wga-logoIn a move calculated to cut at the bone, current WGA President Patric Verrone took things to another level when he injected personal enmity into the election debate, casting doubt on John Wells’ candidacy not because of his cozy relations with management, but his considerable track record for mediocre, by-the-numbers TV writing.

“You’ve seen one ER, you’ve seen them all,” said Verrone, in a venomous statement issued just before ballots reached guild members. “And don’t even get me started on what he did to poor Aaron Sorkin’s baby.”

Verrone was referring to the NBC hit The West Wing, which famously won four consecutive Emmys until Wells took charge of the flagship show in its fifth season, causing a plummet in ratings and popularity.

Wells replied to Verrone’s criticism with typical poise, suggesting that Verrone focus on guild solidarity and the issues currently vexing writers.

“You will recall that a decade ago we were in similarly dire straights, and I effectively used the threat of a strike, without actually going on strike, to get an Internet residual rate of 1.2% of 100%,” he said. “My impeccable relations with management, what my detractors say is my Achilles heel, got us the best residual rate the WGA has ever received for reuse.”

The tempered response caused nothing less than a declaration of war from Verrone, who responded with a scathing review of Third Watch, and then claimed “John Wells is so fat that when he goes to the movies, he sits next to everyone.”

Wells replied without delay, calling on members of the guild to avoid the reactive, snide and bold rhetoric of the Verrone camp, but instead, to opt for a more pragmatic tone.
